How to Use the Healing Spell Calculator
- Pick a spell from the dropdown. D&D healing staples like cure wounds, healing word, prayer of healing, mass cure wounds, and heal are included.
- Select the spell slot. The calculator automatically applies the correct number of dice for upcasting, such as +1d8 per level for cure wounds or +1d4 for healing word.
- Enter your spellcasting modifier (Wisdom for clerics, Charisma for bards, etc.) and how many targets benefit from the spell.
- Click Roll Healing to see total healing, per-target values, and detailed dice output. You can re-roll at will or change spell slots without refreshing.
- Review your recent heals in the history feed—handy for comparing how different spells perform mid-combat.
Features for Clerics, Bards, and Druids
- Multiple Spells: Covers common healing spells plus the flat 70 HP from heal.
- Upcast Logic: Automatically adds the correct number of dice per additional slot level.
- Modifier Display: Spellcasting ability modifiers apply to each target where rules allow.
- Per-Target Totals: Output clarifies how much each character receives, ideal for mass healing word or prayer of healing.
- Dice Transparency: All d4/d8 rolls are shown for players who want to see every number.
Healing Rules in D&D 5e
Cure Wounds: Touch range, rolls 1d8 + spellcasting modifier, plus +1d8 per level above 1st. Healing Word uses 1d4 instead but works at range and as a bonus action. Prayer of Healing heals up to six allies for 2d8 + modifier but takes 10 minutes to cast, while Mass Cure Wounds heals 3d8 + modifier simultaneously within a 30-foot radius. The 6th-level heal spell restores a flat 70 HP and ends blindness, deafness, and diseases. Remember that most spells do not stack temporary hit points and cannot restore a creature at 0 HP beyond returning them to positive values (with exceptions such as Mass Heal).
Always consider action economy: Healing Word is popular for picking up downed allies with a bonus action, while Cure Wounds offers higher single-target healing but costs your action. Prayer of Healing is great between combats, and Mass Cure Wounds or Heal are clutch for major encounters. This calculator ensures you can report exact healing quickly without counting dice manually.
Examples and Tips
A Life Cleric at 5th level casts Cure Wounds with a 3rd-level slot. Select “Cure Wounds,” choose Spell Slot 3, enter +4 for Wisdom, and roll—the calculator shows 3d8 + 4 healing with dice breakdown. Need to revitalize the entire party after a dragon fight? Switch to Mass Cure Wounds, keep the same modifier, and set targets to six. Save the history to compare how effective each spell was. Pair this with the initiative tracker and polyhedral dice roller to track combat more smoothly.
