How to Use the Random Team Generator
- Enter participants in the text box. You can paste a spreadsheet column, comma-separated names, or type manually—blank lines are ignored automatically.
- Choose either a target team size or the number of teams. If both fields are filled, the size takes priority.
- Select Balance Mode. “Balanced” spreads people evenly (difference of at most one). “Allow uneven” simply fills each team in order.
- Press Generate Teams (or tap the space bar) to shuffle the list, build teams, and display them instantly.
- Use Copy List to send the results to chat, docs, or email. The history section keeps recent draws, including timestamp and summary.
Features for Meetings, Classrooms, and Games
- Flexible Input: Accepts multiline or comma-separated lists and trims duplicates automatically.
- Balanced Distribution: Evenly fills teams for fair play. Optional “flex” mode lets you keep one team intentionally smaller or larger.
- Team Size Override: Specify “Teams of 4” and the generator determines exactly how many groups it needs.
- Export & History: Copy the roster with one click and revisit the previous eight assignments if someone asks for “the one we did earlier.”
- Keyboard Shortcuts: Hit Space to rerun the shuffle quickly during rapid-fire sessions.
Tips, Scenarios, and Best Practices
For remote stand-ups, paste everyone who checked in on the call, set teams of 2, and let the generator pick breakout pairs for coffee talks. Teachers can shuffle lab partners while hiding bias by projecting the tool in full screen. Sports coaches can paste the roster, choose “balanced,” and reroll until the vibe feels right—history makes it easy to compare attempts. You can also maintain a small “bench” by setting a team size that leaves a few extras; the summary panel calls that out so nobody gets lost.
Pair this page with the Decision Wheel to determine which team presents first, or the Random Number Generator when teams need jersey numbers. Because everything runs locally, no participant names leave the browser. Refresh the page or clear history to remove sensitive lists when you’re done.
