Wild Magic Rules in D&D 5e

Wild magic sorcerers trigger a surge when the DM calls for it, usually after the player casts a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher. A surge means rolling on the Wild Magic Surge table. Results range from immediate fireball centered on yourself to regaining all sorcery points. Some effects are beneficial, others chaotic, and a few extremely dangerous. The DM decides when to roll—some tables follow strict rules (roll on a 1 after casting), while others roll with advantage if Tides of Chaos has been used. The Tides of Chaos feature allows the sorcerer to gain advantage on an attack, ability check, or saving throw once, but the DM can demand a surge afterward to restore that feature.

Some popular house rules include rolling at the start of every turn, rolling whenever the sorcerer casts a spell, or building up “chaos points” that increase surge chances. Whatever system you use, a reliable surge roller ensures the chaos happens instantly without flipping through books. This tool uses the official PHB table ranges (01-02, 03-04, etc.) for accuracy. If you need custom tables, duplicate the table and modify the entries in your homebrew campaign.

Examples and Table Tips

Rolling a 07-08 means you cast Fireball at 3rd level centered on yourself—make sure your party knows this risk before clustering. Rolling 81-82 turns you into a potted plant until the start of your next turn, at which point you reappear in the same space. Rolling 43-44 affects time dilation, allowing the user to take another action immediately.
